There’s no absolute way to play poker. Every player has their own set of strategies that they swear by, and any may make or break your game in an absolute poker fashion. Regardless of which strategy you swear by, however, there is one absolute phrase you should always swear by: patience.

Whether you’re playing in real life or online, patience is your watchword. You need to both learn and play with patience in mind. You need to be prepared to play through a slew of bad hands in order to hit it big with that one huge pot. You’re highly unlikely to get it with your first hand, so sit back and wait for it to come. Bet only so much that you can stay in the game and wait for everybody else to get knocked out of the poker game. It’s easier to do this online because you’ll at least have other things that can keep your mind occupied.

The key to starting this is to find a place with lots of action. There are a lot of good, high-profile poker sites that can offer this action. Just make sure they have a good rep before you get started or you may lose your money very quickly. Not researching a place is the absolute best way to get yourself screwed over.

Start with low stakes tables if you’re not great at poker. Hone your skills over time and build up a small but steady cash flow. This way you’ll determine if you’re strong enough at cards to take on the bigger tables and risk losing a lot of money in the process.

Be sure to fold most of your hands unless you’re absolutely assured of victory. You aren’t James Bond. You can’t bluff your way to the most stunning victory ever after one round. Be prepared to fold a great deal in the search for a good hand. By doing so you’ll be given the chance to observe other players.

And be sure to change tactics. Avoid predictability. Absolute poker tactics don’t exist, so be flexible and you’ll succeed.
