Draw poker is the ultimate basic when it comes to poker variants. Most new players to the game, either online or offline, should start with draw as their first game of choice, and having learned the basics there move on to other more lucrative pastures.
Draw poker is fairly simple. The object is to have, by the end of two dealings and a round of bets, the best hand out of a given group of players. Cards are never dealt face up in draw (though they are in the more popular HoldEm variant), and each player is given five. During the first round the players must set their bets, going around the table and back to the dealer. Players may opt to remain in the hand or drop out at this point (or, as poker players call it, fold).
The remaining players may then choose to throw out some of their cards (which they usually will), throw out of all of their cards and draw an entirely new hand (which they usually won’t unless their hand was fairly abysmal) or keep their hand and proceed on to the next round without action (again, not very common; most hands have at least one useless card).
Betting takes place again in the same manner. Players may call, raise, or fold. Again the play ends with the dealer.
Any players left remaining at the end of this round now have a showdown. The player with the best poker hand wins the pot. If there’s only one player left then there’s no showdown and that player receives the pot regardless of how good their hand was (usually the best bluffers will end the game at this point).
Once that round is complete, another round commences following the exact same order. The game continues until a) the players get sick of playing and drop out, b) all players but one have lost their money (and the remaining player typically has everything that was in the other player’s wallets) or c) two players are left and they agree to split the winnings and end the game.
