How to play poker

Want to learn how to play poker? No surprise. Games like Texas Holdem and Five Card Stud have taken the world by storm, and now poker is everywhere, from ads and television shows to a myriad of sites online. It’s really not that hard to learn how, but there are a few things you want keep in mind before you jump in on the world of poker and begin play.

Your first step is deciding how you want begin. You can either decide on playing with a group of flesh-and-blood friends or you can step online. In-person is a good way, if you can manage wrangle up friends who know the intricacies of playing poker. However that’s not always a simple proposition, as many friends are very busy and won’t be able to teach you how to play poker on a regular basis.

More, most friends – especially those who know the game inside and out – will want cash games. And as a beginner that’s probably not something you’re interested in. The key, instead, is finding a group of like-minded beginners (or even veterans who just like playing for fun) who won’t pressure you into a cash game.

Invariably, then, you’ll probably play your first games online. And given the number of instruction manuals available that’s probably not a bad idea anyway, as you can choose and fight it out with either real people from across the globe or with computers who will give you a chance on planning out your moves and making the right betting decisions. It’s your choice either way.

One of the best ways to start in on professional play is with a Freeroll tournament. Freerolls, as their name implies, are completely free; but if you do extremely well in the tournament you may be eligible for a nice little cash prize, always a nice bonus for learning how to play. Just bear in mind that most Freeroll poker tournaments fill up very quickly, so you need to sign up for one very quickly if you want in on the action.
